East Liverpool, OH – Ohio Valley College of Technology participated in its first ever Alumni and Community Memorial Day Event. Staff members, alumni, students, and their families and friends all joined together to share in a memorable day with their “OVCT family” on Sunday, March 26th on the OVCT campus. More than 200 turned out for this event, and funds raised benefited the Beaver Creek Wildlife Education Center.
Current students, OVCT Alumni, and members of OVCT’s faculty and staff donated their time and talents to create a fun, free event for everyone to enjoy – even inviting community members to come out to participate. With over 200 people attending, the campus was full of a variety of free activities and refreshments to keep everyone busy.
The two bounce houses were a big hit, while volunteers kept the free popcorn, cotton candy, and slushies coming all day long. At lunchtime complimentary sub sandwiches, snacks and drinks were also provided.
Newell Assistant Fire Chief, Tim Steele, brought out the Newell Tanker truck in the morning to help fill the dunk tank. Just before the event started, he also brought out the brand new Newell fire truck to surprise the kids.
“Anything I can do to help,” Steele said. “OVCT does so much for the community, and this is just one more way for me to give back too. I love being a part of events like these.”
OVCT Campus President, Scott Rogers, even made a special appearance in the dunk tank! Proceeds from funds collected at the dunk tank are being donated to the Beaver Creek Wildlife Education Center.
“It was cold, but it was worth it,” Mr. Rogers said, “It is a great feeling to look out there and see so many alumni, students, and especially their families coming out to OVCT to have fun on such a meaningful day.”
OVCT Alumni were out in full force to sign up for the OVCT Alumni Association, and to receive their free Alumni t-shirts.
Carley Michaels, a recent Alumni member, said the event was a great way to stay connected and catch up with all of her friends and teachers.
“I wish we could have events like that more often! I miss my OVCT family, I wish I was back already!”
Amanda McHenry, an Alumni member and current OVCT instructor, had a great time with her family at the event.
“It was wonderful seeing all the students and their families. I loved the design for the Alumni t-shirts and it was great to see my friends, and the students and their families out having fun!”
Jason Shipley, a community member and friend of Mrs. McHenry’s, generously donated many of the equipment rentals and some supplies. McHenry said, “Mr. Shipley is very generous in nature, and loves to do whatever he can to help members of the community.”
The event was a huge success, and OVCT hopes to have more events like this in the future!
